Wilderness First Aid

Backcountry Medical Guides and Shifting Gears have partnered to offer an all-women Wilderness First Aid course in 2024.

When: April 27 - 28, 2024 ​

Where: Larrabee State Park - 245 Chuckanut Drive, Bellingham, WA

Who: This unique course is designed for and led by women, fostering a supportive and empowering learning environment. Join a community of like-minded individuals, share experiences, and build lasting connections with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Certification: Participants have the opportunity to earn a two-day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification paired with CPR training. These certifications are crucial for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enhance their safety skills in the wild.

  • Experiential Learning: Immerse yourself in a dynamic and practical learning environment. Backcountry Medical Guides’ classes are designed to be hands-on, allowing participants to apply their knowledge in simulated outdoor scenarios. This approach ensures that skills are learned and retained in real-life situations.

  • Fundamental Wilderness Medicine: Learn essential wilderness medicine techniques for handling emergencies in remote locations. From basic wound care to improvised splinting, participants gain comprehensive knowledge to address a range of medical situations.

  • Preventative Techniques: Understand the importance of prevention in the wilderness. BMG courses emphasize proactive measures, empowering participants to mitigate risks and make informed decisions to ensure their and others' safety.

  • Judgment Skills Development: Sharpen your judgment skills for outdoor emergencies. Through scenario-based learning, participants enhance their ability to assess situations, prioritize actions, and make informed decisions in challenging wilderness environments.

Scholarships Available: We believe in making outdoor education accessible. Scholarships are available for participants on a rolling basis. About Your Instructor, Julie Ann Holder: EMT-B - Born and raised in the heart of Atlanta, you would never guess it... Julie Ann is happiest when immersed in remote wilderness, traversing Cascadian glaciers, climbing moderate alpine routes, trail-running for hours and hours, or teaching crevasse rescue to a group of aspiring alpinists. In the past several years, she has guided multi-day mountain expeditions in the PNW, ski patrolled, taught Avalanche courses across several different snowpacks, and supported ultra-runners in wilderness settings. She is passionate about empowering people in their pursuit of adventure and deeper connection with the wild places of the world. Julie Ann is a Wilderness EMT-B, AMGA Apprentice Rock, Ski, and Alpine Guide, Pro 2 certified avalanche professional, Leave No Trace Master Educator, and holds a BS in Recreation Management from Appalachian State University.
