About Shifting Gears

We host programs to empower you. Participants walk away with the skills and tools needed to attain their recreational goals.

Whether it be learning how to change a flat tire, go above and beyond physically by cycling 30 or 100 miles, locating accessible trails or finding a hiking partner, back or bikepacking for the first time, inspiring goals, or just remembering how to play... our aim is to create a welcoming environment for all women to join in, learn, and enjoy.

Mission

Shifting Gears empowers all women through outdoor recreation and education opportunities to remove barriers and foster belonging.

Vision

A recreation community that:

  • Is absent of any gender, race, or socio-economic biases

  • Redesigns the norms and expectations of who takes up space in the outdoors

  • Provides equitable access to underrepresented communities

Shifting Gears is a Bellingham, WA nonprofit that is dedicated to removing barriers to outdoor recreation for women, allowing the transformational power of nature and shared physical challenges to create community, boost self-esteem, and drive self-actualization. We see firsthand the direct impact our programs make on participants who are discovering new ways to play as adults, find joy and passion in outdoor recreation, gain comfort in community and grow as individuals.
