Ready to take your backpacking skills to the next level? Join us for a 3-day, 2-night adventure into the stunning Alpine Lakes Wilderness as we explore the West Fork Foss River and its chain of breathtaking alpine lakes.
This intermediate-level trip is designed for those who are comfortable with the basics and eager to build endurance, confidence, and backcountry decision-making skills. Our route follows the West Fork Foss River Trail, gradually climbing through old-growth forest to serene Trout Lake before continuing upward to higher alpine destinations such as Copper Lake, Little Heart Lake, or beyond. Along the way, we’ll encounter cascading waterfalls, rocky ridgelines, and expansive mountain views.
Participants should be prepared for a more challenging experience, with total mileage reaching up to ~12-15 miles round trip and elevation gain of up to 3,300 feet depending on our turnaround point. The trail begins gently but becomes steeper and more rugged beyond Trout Lake, offering an ideal progression for building strength and backcountry resilience.
Over the course of three days, we’ll refine essential backpacking skills including:
Efficient packing and load management
Advanced camp selection and setup
Navigation and route planning
Food planning and backcountry cooking
Risk management and group travel strategies
We’ll also have time to slow down and enjoy camp life -swimming or relaxing by alpine lakes, exploring nearby viewpoints, and connecting with fellow backpackers in a spectacular wilderness setting.
This program is perfect for those looking to transition from beginner trips to more demanding backcountry adventures while gaining hands-on experience in a supportive group environment.
